Looking for Relief: Best Practice for Pain Management Plans

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMSHA, opioid misuse statistics among older adults almost doubled between 2002 and 2014. Annually, half a million older adults are prescribed “high amounts of opioids” through their Medicare Part D plans. Research shows that these patients are at a higher risk of misuse due to conditions around pain, sleep, and anxiety - common occurrences in older adults. Additionally, older adults taking opioids are four to five times more likely to fall than those taking nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs – which creates a cycle of pain.  As healthcare professionals, you can help your patients by informing them about opioids and their effects as well as exploring alternatives to opioids.
This provider to provider workshop will explore CDC and National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health guidelines for best practices around chronic pain.  As a healthcare provider, you will be able to use this information to create comprehensive pain management plans for your patients.
