Gardy can rest too, wherever he is | Photo by Mitchell Layton/Getty Images For the first time in two and a half weeks, the Yankees will rest. When I was watching the Yankees’ lineup feebly flail for the majority of Friday night, I could never have imagined that a sweep could be coming. Thankfully, the Tigers failed to get all 27 outs — in fact they didn’t even get a 25th — as the Yanks rallied to win in the ninth before winning on both Saturday and Sunday. The weather was the stealth hero yesterday afternoon, as Aaron Boone didn’t even have to be tempted to use Clay Holmes in a three-run game for the save. Instead, the rain came, and after almost an hour of waiting, the game was called in the eighth. We’ll take it! Now, the Yankees have a well-deserved offday after 17 games in 17 days. They’ll take a breath and reconvene on Tuesday, when they welcome those always-annoying Astros to town. They’re a little better than they looked during their horrid 7-19 start, but they did lose back-to-back games to Seattle at home over the last couple days. May they play as well this week as they did in Houston to start the season against the Yankees. Today on the site, Jake will have the Rivalry Roundup, John will revisit the 1999 Yankees’ pyrrhic-victory rumble at the Metrodome 25 years ago today, and Kunj and I will have the latest episode of “Podument Park.” Later, Peter will discuss Alex Verdugo’s quietly elite start to the season, and Madison will put out the call for your mailbag questions. Today’s Matchup: Offday Questions/Prompts: 1. How are you feeling about the Yankees on a scale of 1-5? (Five is “28, HERE WE COME” and one is “DOOMED.”) 2. The Knicks begin their second-round showdown tonight against the Pacers. What’s your series prediction?
718area has new update 18 hours ago Giants news, 5/6: Dave Gettleman, Daniel Jones, more headlines
Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images New York Giants headlines for Monday Good morning, New York Giants fans! From Big Blue View Ex-Giants GM Dave Gettleman calls media draft analysts ‘clowns’ How do bad NFL teams become good teams? Bonus mailbag: The Joe Schoen edition Big Blue View mailbag: NFL Draft fallout edition More headlines Don't count out Daniel Jones as the Giants' starting quarterback just yet | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF There is no hiding the fact that Jones was poor in 2023, even outside of injury. The missed time only served to highlight his struggles because every new quarterback who played managed to make the offense look better than Jones did. That was one thing when an experienced veteran like Tyrod Taylor was able to do it, but it took on a whole new dimension when Tommy DeVito — an undrafted free agent nicknamed “Cutlets” — was also able to. Jones earned a 54.4 PFF passing grade, by far the worst of the trio on the season, and his flaws as a quarterback seemed to exacerbate the weaknesses in the Giants’ offensive personnel. Taylor, in particular, was able to hide the bad offensive line far better than Jones or DeVito could. But it’s also only reasonable to point out that the situation around all of the Giants quarterbacks was terrible. New York finished 30th in PFF pass-blocking efficiency on the season, allowing 245 total pressures in 17 games. Wan’Dale Robinson led the team in targets and catches, while Darius Slayton led them in receiving yards, with just 769. No receiver averaged more than a pedestrian 1.38 yards per route run, and running back Saquon Barkley tied for the receiving touchdown lead. Any quarterback would have been set up to fail in that scenario, and Jones just happened to be a stylistic match that poured gas on the dumpster fire. Lombardi: NYG's loyalty to players causes 'bad decisions' "I wasn't surprised at all by that," Lombardi said on The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan in D.C. on Monday. "Because if you listened to what John Mara said at the owners' meetings ... he said very clearly, 'I'll favor them drafting a quarterback if they're in love.' And he used the word 'love.'" "I think they were in love with Drake Maye, but I don't think they were in love with J.J. McCarthy. And remember, John Mara, the president of the team -- he's the reason why Daniel Jones is making all that money -- he loves Daniel Jones. He drafted Daniel Jones as the sixth pick overall. Nothing would make them more happy than Daniel Jones being successful. They're almost willing it to happen. It won't, but they're hoping it will." In Lombardi's estimation, the Giants' leadership is loyal to a fault to their players -- and it's hurting the franchise on the field. "And they've gone 10 years -- they're the only team in the NFC East that has not won the East in the last 10 years. They have the worst record in the last 10 years in the NFC East. It's a shame, because the Giants should be a stellar franchise in the league. But, because they fall in love with their players, they love their players, they make bad decisions."
