201area has new update 1 day ago Sam Dickinson: 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile: Low Risk, High Reward
Dickinson does a bit of everything well. | GREG WOHLFORD/ERIE TIMES-NEWS / USA TODAY NETWORK The prospect profile series continues with Sam Dickinson, a low risk, high reward defenseman, who is almost NHL-ready, but will he be there when the Devils select? Low risk, high reward is as good as it gets when selecting a prospect in the draft. Sam Dickinson seems to fit that description. Let’s look at the details. Who is Sam Dickinson? Sam Dickinson was born June 7, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Elite Prospects lists the left-handed defenseman at 6’3’’, 194 pounds. Dickinson began his noted hockey career with the Toronto Marlboros, putting up 39 points in 46 games for their U-16 team in 2021-22. The past two seasons, Dickinson has been back-ending the London Knights of the OHL. Dickinson’s first season in the OHL was decent for a D-2, putting up 23 points in 62 games against mostly older kids. This past year, Dickinson broke out with 70 points in 68 games, finishing fourth in OHL scoring for defensemen and second for defensemen in his draft class behind only Zayne Parekh. The London Knights are in the middle of an impressive playoff run that has them leading, as of the time of this writing, in their finals series against the Oshawa Generals and two wins away from the OHL championship. Dickinson has continued his strong play during the post-season, adding eleven points in the first sixteen playoff games. Should the London Knights finish off the Generals, they will compete for the Memorial Cup. Where is Sam Dickinson Ranked? #4 by CONSOLIDATED RANKING #7 by TSN/BOB McKENZIE #6 by TSN/CRAIG BUTTON #7 by NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING (NA Skaters) #4 by ISS HOCKEY #7 by DOBBERPROSPECTS #8 by SMAHT SCOUTING All of these rankings are before the Devils pick, so chances are slim that Dickinson will still be on the board. However, with so many defensemen ranked in this range, there is a chance Dickinson will slip as other teams select the more pure offensive talents. What Others are Saying About Sam Dickinson? Peter Baracchini of the Hockey Writers wrote this article on Sam Dickinson last month that explains why the defenseman is so highly touted. I highly suggest reading the entire piece, but here are a few choice quotes from the article: Dickinson already excels with his strong defensive game and IQ without the puck. He defends extremely well against the rush and within his own zone, something that other defenders are inconsistent with this early on in their development. That aspect to his game is near pro ready... In addition to the offensive outburst, Dickinson already has a near pro-ready defensive game, which bodes well for a future top-pairing defenseman. Here is another quote from the same article: While he’s great at reading the play when attacking players enter the zone, he isn’t afraid to engage physically and lay the body. Whether it’s an open ice hit or along the boards, Dickinson imposes his will and makes life difficult for the opposition. Not being difficult enough to play against has been one of the most longstanding complaints amongst the Devils faithful. Dickinson does not have that issue. Again, Dickinson is not a one-dimensional hitter or a goon. The 6’3’’ defender incurred only 30 penalty minutes all season and a mere 12 in his first year in the OHL. Brock Otten wrote for McKeen’s hockey about the key to Dickinson’s game: The foundation of Dickinson’s game is his mobility. It’s rare to find a defender who moves as well as Dickinson does at 6’3. It was no surprise to see him dominate the on-ice testing at the CHL Top Prospect’s Game; he’s a spectacular athlete. Thanks to his effortless skating stride, Dickinson is an impactful player at both ends of the ice and is able to play aggressively, with and without the puck. A Little Video For video, interested parties should click on this link to Brock Otten’s article for McKeen’s hockey, which is full of video and in depth analysis on Dickinson’s game. For those with less time, here is a summary of Dickinson video for McKeen’s hockey: More video can be found here on Blue Chip Prospects: An Opinion of Sorts Whoever picks Sam Dickinson is going to get an almost surefire NHLer and likely future top pairing defenseman. While Dickinson would not be my first choice amongst defensemen in this very defensively-stacked draft, my thoughts on whether the Devils should take him really come down to who is available when and if the Devils pick at 10th overall. If Dickinson is still undrafted when the Devils select, then the 6’3’’ defender is very likely to be the best prospect available and would be very hard to pass up. One could argue the Devils do not need more young defensemen in their system and while I think that is true for purely offensive-defensemen, now that Seamus Casey has been signed, they do need defenders capable of shutting down plays. As we saw this past season, sometimes defenders regress, so it never hurts to have more in the pipeline just in case. Dickinson could be a shutdown defender, who contributes enough offensively to be a top pairing blueliner in the not-so-distant future. That’s a great player to have in the system for any team.
